The 4G version will remain in production and continues to be a practical choice for many deployments. The 5G RedCap variant, by contrast, targets use cases that demand higher cellular throughput and 5G SA network access — without requiring the full radio capabilities of an eMBB-class 5G modem.

Why 5G RedCap for a PLC Gateway?

5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) was introduced in 3GPP Release 17 to bridge the gap between low-rate cellular IoT technologies such as NB-IoT and LTE-M, and full-featured 5G NR (eMBB). In FR1 bands, RedCap restricts device bandwidth to 20 MHz and scales back requirements on antenna branches and MIMO capabilities. The result is a leaner 5G device architecture aimed at applications that do not require the full complexity of an eMBB-class modem.

For a PLC gateway, this trade-off is particularly appropriate. Industrial data acquisition seldom demands multi-gigabit cellular speeds. Nonetheless, certain projects require substantially more uplink and downlink capacity than Cat.1 can provide, along with access to compatible 5G SA networks. What Does 5G RedCap Change in PLC Data Acquisition?

What 5G changes: the WAN/backhaul link — that is, the segment from the gateway to the remote platform, cloud, or engineer’s workstation.

The EG8200Mini-5G delivers:

  • Higher cellular throughput — 226 Mbps downlink and 120 Mbps uplink peak rates, versus 10/5 Mbps on the 4G Cat.1 version, enabling larger payloads and more frequent transmissions.

  • 5G SA network support — offering a migration path toward industrial 5G SA deployments where compatible spectrum and network infrastructure are in place.

  • Greater capacity headroom — providing more bandwidth when multiple data streams share the same connection.

What 5G does not change: the local acquisition link — the connection between the gateway and field devices.

  • The cellular upgrade does not increase the speed of the local Ethernet connection to a Siemens S7 PLC.

  • A Modbus RTU device connected via RS485 continues to operate at its configured baud rate — whether 9600, 19200, or 115200 bps.

  • PLC polling intervals, scan cycles, and protocol-level response times are not inherently accelerated by the cellular upgrade.

Local acquisition performance depends on the gateway’s processor, memory, protocol stack, and field-side communication configuration — not on the WAN module. The EG8200Mini-5G does move from a dual-core to a 3-core Cortex-A7 processor, providing additional processing resources for local workloads. The fundamental point, however, remains unchanged:

5G improves the link to the outside world. It does not make your RS485 faster.

This is not a shortcoming — it is an accurate characterization of where the upgrade actually applies.

Which PLC Protocols Does EG8200Mini-5G Support?

A Modbus-only integration works perfectly well when the PLC already exposes all required data via Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP. In many projects, however, engineers need to communicate with the PLC through its native protocol, rather than adding Modbus mapping or PLC-side logic solely for data acquisition purposes.

The 5G model is not a direct replacement for the 4G model across the board.
