NB-IoT gradually becomes the main carrying technology for low-speed Internet of Things

Since 2017, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued multiple documents to promote the continuous development of the Internet of Things industry including NB-IoT, Cat.1, etc. On May 7, 2020, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the “Notice on Further Promoting the Comprehensive Development of the Mobile Internet of Things” No. 25, which sets out requirements for NB-IoT/Cat.1 network coverage, module prices, number of IoT connections, etc., and guides The gradual migration of 2G/3G IoT terminals to NB-IoT and Cat.1 will guide the establishment of a comprehensive NB/4G/5G mobile IoT ecosystem.

As national policies promote the inclusion of 5G standards and the withdrawal of 2G networks, as well as the continuous implementation of business scenarios and the formation of a positive business cycle, NB-IoT has become one of the best choices for cellular IoT connection technology. Market demand, policy guidance, industry exploration, and the advancement of Chinese chip and other technologies are constantly driving the penetration of NB-IoT technology into application fields.

In the spatial structure of the Internet of Things business market, the scale of the medium- and low-speed Internet of Things industry is huge. The scale of low-speed Internet of Things connections in the distribution of IoT connections accounts for more than 60%, mainly meeting the connection needs of low power consumption and wide coverage. Among them, NB-IoT technology is more suitable than 2G technology for business scenarios that do not require high mobility and delay, small data volume, and low power consumption. At the same time, NB-IoT also has low power consumption, massive connections, and wide coverage. , the core advantage of low cost. This also means that, following 2G technology, NB-IoT technology will become the main carrying technology for domestic low-speed IoT market services.

China Mobile accelerates industrial migration

According to the guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China Mobile Group Headquarters has made it clear that NB and Cat.1 will undertake the 2G IoT business. It will stop adding new 2G IoT users at the end of 2020. On the basis of ensuring the use of existing users, it will guide customers to use 2G IoT for new services. Migrate to NB/Cat.1.

China Mobile will also accelerate the NB-IoT/Cat.1 industry by promoting a series of measures such as lowering the price of NB-IoT/Cat.1 modules, strengthening network coverage, improving network quality, enhancing the core capabilities of terminals and platforms, and improving customer service guarantees. development and maturity.

At the NB-IoT Domestic Internet of Things Solution-Technology Development Summit Forum held in Shanghai not long ago, Wang Chao, Marketing Director of China Mobile’s IoT Intelligent Module Department, mentioned that in terms of NB-IoT network construction, China Mobile has achieved nationwide The NB network connection covers 346 cities, towns and above, and has more than 700,000 NB website building resources. Currently, more than 350,000 sites have been opened. This year, 50,000 on-demand website building resources are planned to increase NB-IoT.

At the chip and module level, China Mobile is also working with the industry chain to accelerate progress. In-depth expansion of typical NB-IoT application scenarios such as water meters, gas meters, smoke detectors, electric vehicle tracking, shared bicycles, home appliances, door locks, etc., China Mobile organized a special team to work with industry leading customers to create more such as “Zhengzhou Tram Terminal” , the industry benchmark project of “Tianjin Water and Fuel Meter Renovation” has helped the industry to rapidly increase volume, thus driving down module prices further.
